Grassroots Legislative Organizer's Blog #9

Sunday, March 7

Cathy Byrd, Grassroots Legislative OrganizerDelivering 14,000 Names On Monday, we delivered the names of 14,000 caregivers who called on the legislature this session to raise revenue and prevent cuts to home care and other critical long-term care services. Because we don’t have a common work place, we took everyone that tried to call their legislator or who signed the petition online/over the phone and delivered them to key budget decision makers.

Calling Legislators
On Tuesday, members helped other members call legislators who could help make a difference in saving long-term care and raising revenue. We have worked to communicate with legislators in several ways: phone calls, emails, post cards, visits, etc. The session is supposed to end this Thursday (March 11) so we don’t have much time left.

Calling Legislators (again)
On Wednesday, we called legislators and urged them to support a budget amendment to protect home care hours and raise enough revenue to prevent cuts to home care services.

Purple Presence
Thursday was our last Purple Presence for the session. I enjoyed meeting all of the members who showed up this session. It was an honor to meet so many new members and see members I had met during lobby day. We delivered over 200 post cards to legislators from districts across Washington. We had 28 members and 4 clients. We pulled legislators of the House Floor. We organized ourselves on the third floor of Capitol building. It was a very active place, with everyone waiting to talk to their legislators. It was a lot of running around, but at least it was a beautiful day.
