Description/Background InformationGrassroots Legislative Organizers (GLOs) provide lobbying and organizing support during the legislative session. This leadership position is for members with considerable legislative, political and organizing experience.
GLOs will work between 3 to 5 days per week (Monday through Friday) during the legislative session (January 11th, 2009 through March 11th, 2009). Orientation will be held in Olympia on Thursday, January 7th from 9am to 5pm. A post-session program debrief will be held on March 15th in Federal Way from 9am to 5pm.
Compensation Lost time wage per hour, pro-rated monthly auto allowance in the amount of $424/month, and 80% gas receipt reimbursement. Reimbursement of up to $25/week of cell phone use. If we cannot work out a continuation of employer health care through the Grassroots Legislative Organizer’s regular employer, we will include health, dental, and vision health care benefits. (Some employers such as CCS will allow the continuation of benefits without any changes during union leave.)
Duties • Attend legislative committee hearings
• Provide lobbying support to the 775NW Capitol team
• Train and lead other members during weekly Purple Presence lobby days
• Member recruitment and mobilization
• Run phone banks from the Olympia office
• Keep a regular journal to be shared with other members
• Host conference calls
• Other duties as assigned, including administrative work
Requirements
• Personal commitment to the mission and goals of SEIU and to the specific program of SEIU Healthcare 775NW.
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to work well under pressure
• Ability to understand and discuss complex issues
• Ability to remain calm and objective when discussing controversial issues
• Interest in the legislative and political process
• Flexibility and can-do attitude
• Basic computer skills
• Live within one hour of Olympia and be willing to commute to Capitol on a daily basis
• Driver’s license, current insurance, and regular access to car
Will meals be provided? Generally not, although we will provide lunch during the orientation and debrief.
What about my client and homecare duties? It is your responsibility to find coverage and respite care for your client during the times you will be a Grassroots Legislative Organizer. We encourage you to consider having your client contract with home care agencies whose workers are in our Union. A list can be provided for you.
