Member Organizer FAQ

Will I get paid?
Yes. You will be paid your regular hourly wage for the 40 hour per week internship.

What about my client and homecare duties?
It is your responsibility to find coverage and respite care for your client during the times you will work as a new member organizer. We encourage you to consider having your client contract with home care agencies whose workers are in our union. A list can be provided for you.

What do I do as a Member Organizer? Member Organizers will participate in an initial three-day training followed by three weeks of in-the-field campaign work talking to not-yet-union caregivers. You will receive ongoing trainings throughout the course of the campaign while you learn to effectively engage these caregivers in conversations so they understand how they can make improvements to their job through forming a union with SEIU Healthcare 775NW.

What will my schedule look like?
Working on an organizing campaign requires a certain amount of flexibility in your schedule. However, as a member organizer, you can expect to work a full paid 40 hour week, usually starting the day at noon, and ending the day at 8pm. Weekend work is expected as well.

What will a typical day look like?
After the initial training session, member organizers will meet daily as a team at noon in campaign headquarters. You will be given a list of not-yet-union caregivers and their home addresses in a given territory. You will be expected to manage your list efficiently and visit as many caregivers as you can throughout the rest of the day. You will return to campaign headquarters at in the evening to debrief your day, and will be free to go home at 8pm.

Do I need to have a car?
Yes. A reliable car and a valid driver’s license are both requirements of this position. You will be reimbursed for 80% of your gas receipts, as well as receive a monthly auto allowance of $424/month.

Do I need to have a cell phone?
A working cell phone is not a requirement of this position; however, it is highly desirable. You will receive a cell phone reimbursement of up to $25/week.

Will this lead to a permanent position working as union staff
No. Working as a member organizer is a temporary paid leadership development opportunity.
