Quotes from Previous Interns

Marianne Brown"I've stepped out of my little box for a good cause…
to win changes for caregivers, their clients and families.”
--(Marianne Brown, Napa Vine; Individual Care Provider)

Arlene Lamb“I was able to meet other caregivers and learn that I was not alone.
I also learned a lot about how my Union works for people like me.”
--(Arlene Lamb, Centralia; Catholic Community Services)

Dylan Whitehead"On my second day, I met someone who initially said he couldn’t afford to contribute to our Political Accountability Fund. I told him he couldn’t afford not to. Our members elect politicians who support us and un-elect those who don’t. He signed up right away!”
--(Dylan Whitehead, Elma; AAA Residential)

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a car?

Yes. You must have a reliable car, driver's license and current insurance. You cannot participate in the program if you do not have a car, license and insurance.

Will I get paid?

Yes.  You will be paid your regular hourly wage for the 40 hour per week internship. You will NOT be paid for other volunteer activities to build the union (door knocking for candidates, for example)

Will meals be provided?

Generally not, though we will have lunch and coffee during the Boot Camp, and other all day in-office trainings. You will eat lunch and take breaks during the day.

What about my client and homecare duties?

It is your responsibility to find coverage and respite care for your client during the times you will be a MCOI intern.  We encourage you to consider having your client contract with home care agencies whose workers are in our Union.  A list can be provided for you.

What do I do as a MCOI intern?

You will participate in regular in-office trainings and one-on-one work with your team lead. With this training, you will learn to effectively engage these caregivers in conversations so they understand the connection between what they dream about seeing changed in their lives-- and how they can win those changes through involvement in our union.

For house visits, you will be provided with a list, and material which will allow you to locate their homes easily. You will have members sign cards, invite them to join the Political Accountability Fund, and encourage them to become more involved in their union. You will also do this at union agency check pickups and shift changes.
