Frequently Asked Questions
Will I get paid?
Yes. You will be paid your regular hourly wage for the 40 hour per week internship. You will NOT be paid for other volunteer activities to build the union (door knocking for candidates, for example)
Will meals be provided?
Generally not, though we will have breakfast, lunch and coffee during the Boot Camp, and other all day in-office trainings. You will eat lunch and take breaks during the day.
What about my client and homecare duties?
It is your responsibility to find coverage and respite care for your client during the times you will be a MCOI intern. We encourage you to consider having your client contract with home care agencies whose workers are in our Union. A list can be provided for you.
What do I do as a MCOI intern?
You will participate in regular in-office trainings and one-on-one work with your team lead; you will learn how to do successful house visits. Each day, you will visit a list of Individual Providers who are fee payers- not union members. We will provide you with written directions between houses so you can locate each IP. You will learn to effectively engage these caregivers in conversations so they understand the connection between what they dream about seeing changed in their lives-- and how they can win those changes through involvement in our union.
Most fee payers haven’t signed up because they haven’t been personally asked to join. You will sign them up as members, ask them to join the Political Accountability Fund, and invite them to get more involved in their union.
During the internship, you will also have the opportunity to learn how to effectively mobilize SEIU Healthcare 775NW members for events/hearings.
