Working Families Tax Credit Passes House - with Reauthorization Requirement
Olympia (March 10, 2008) -- Late last week, the state House voted to pass the
Working Families Tax Credit. The bill, already approved once by the Senate, is designed to provide tax relief to some 350,000 lower-income working families, including many SEIU Healthcare 775 NW members and our clients across the state.
However, the House also weakened the bill by requiring the Legislature to specifically reauthorize the tax break every two years. This requirement will force consumer advocates to return to Olympia every year to make sure that working families recieve the benefits of this tax credit. No such requirements apply to hundreds of corporate tax giveaways provided by the State. The Senate is expected to go along with the House version of the bill.
