Summary

SEIU Healthcare 775NW, long-term care workers union in WA/MT/ID, seeks a Deputy Director of Member Programs and Participation. This position, equivalent to an assistant field director/internal organizing director in most SEIU locals, is a senior management position responsible as second in command for all of the union’s member strength programs. This is an opportunity for the right candidate to join the staff leadership team of a young, fast-growing, innovative, bold and progressive union that has grown from 1700 to 41,000 members in the long-term care industry in the space of 8 years.

Description

The Deputy Director of Membership Programs and Participation (equivalent to an assistant field director/internal organizing director in most SEIU locals) is a senior management position responsible as second in command for all of the union’s member strength programs and relationships, including member participation in union activities, leadership development, member mobilization, political fundraising, collective bargaining negotiations, contract enforcement, joint labor-management partnerships, member communications and member services.    The Director oversees six work teams within the Member Programs & Participation Department, including teams (each with its own manager) for:  leadership development program, collective bargaining/employer relations team, field canvass, member communications team, data systems team and the Member Resource Center: an inbound call center which coordinates with two Taft Hartley Trusts delivering health care and workforce development benefits. The Department is innovating new ways to increase rank-and-file union participation and leader roles. 

 

We are seeking a Deputy Director whose skills complement the current Director, for an effective division of labor and alignment of leadership.

 

Requirements of this position include:

 

·         Several years of experience working in the labor movement, preferably within SEIU.

·         Experience supervising union organizers and/or representatives.

·         Demonstrated success at teambuilding, coaching, and staff supervision.

·         Experience directing successful contract campaigns.

·         Experience directing efforts to mobilize union members for political and legislative campaigns.

·         Experience in designing and implementing leadership development programs for union members.

·         Experience directing successful labor-management relations programs and enforcing collectively bargained agreement.

·         Experience directing at least two of the following types of campaigns or projects if preferred:

o   NLRB-style certification campaigns

o   Electoral campaigns (such as a state legislative or Congressional campaign),

o   Fundraising or membership canvassing (such as ACORN, PIRG, Citizen Action, etc.)

o   Inbound call centers

o   Experience directing or implementing communications programs and strategies.

·         Professional proficiency in U.S. labor and employment laws.

·         A commitment to building a 21st-Century union movement, to risk-taking, and to the mission, vision, and values of SEIU.

Preferences

Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply. Fluency in a second language is plus. Experience working with a labor union, progressive non-profit, community organization, advocacy group, political campaign or elected official is a plus. Demonstrated commitment to creating positive worker/employer relationships while fighting to raise standards for all workers in the industry is also a plus.

Compensation

Salary range is $65,000 to $75,000 annually, depending on experience. Benefits include fully employer-paid family benefits (includes domestic partner) for health, dental, pharmacy and vision coverage, fully employer-paid defined benefit pension (SEIU), disability and life insurance, a generous leave package, car allowance, an optional 401(K) plan, and other benefits outlined in the policies of SEIU Healthcare 775NW.
