Mission, Vision and Values

OUR MISSION:
Our mission is to unite the strength of all Long Term Care workers, to improve the lives of working people and lead the way to a more just and humane world.

OUR VISION:
We have a vision for our union that SEIU Healthcare 775NW will grow to unite all long-term care workers, to become the most powerful voice for the long-term care industry, and to become the most powerful economic, political, community and workplace organization in our State, in order to achieve economic justice for all workers in our industry.

We have a vision for our economy that all workers and their families will live and work in dignity; that all work will be fulfilling and fairly rewarded; that workers will have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect them; that workers will have the opportunity to develop their talents and skills; that the collective voice and power of workers will be realized in democratic and progressive unions; that solidarity will stand firm against the forces of the non-union economy; that government will play an active role in improving the lives of working people; that those who depend on long term care services will be valued as human beings, and assured of quality affordable care.

OUR VALUES:
1. Dignity. SEIU Healthcare 775NW is an organization of thousands of long-term care workers united by the belief in the dignity and worth of working people and the work we do. We also believe that the rights and dignity of consumers of long term care services should be respected and upheld.

2. Power. We believe that unions are the means by which working people build power -- by which ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things.   We believe that power is the currency of change – and that unless workers build and exercise power, our lives will not change for the better, and may change for the worse.

3. Unity.   We believe that our strength comes from our unity, and that we can accomplish little as separate individuals, but that together we have the power to create a just society.  We believe that our future cannot be separated from that of workers in other parts of our state, our nation, our economy and our world who struggle for economic justice, a decent life for their families, dignity, and democracy.   To win justice, we must build unity and solidarity with each other and with our allies.

4.Leadership.  We believe that we have an obligation to grow and develop leaders from amongst our membership to lead the union.  We also believe that we must lead not only our members, but also all workers, our allies, our industry, our state, and our economy toward a better future for working people.

5. Diversity. We believe that we must not be divided by forces of discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age, physical ability, sexual orientation, or immigration status.  We believe that we have a special mission to bring economic and social justice to those workers who are most exploited in our economy.  We believe that workers in the diverse sectors of our long-term care industry, and the diverse geographies of our state, can and must unite in our union in order to win dignity and justice.

6. Participation. We believe that our power and effectiveness depend upon active participation and commitment from our members.   We believe unions are necessary for a democratic society to prevail, and that unions must participate in the political life of our society.

7. Responsibility. We believe we have a responsibility to leave the world a better place for our children, and everyone’s children.

8. Accountability.  We believe that we must hold those in power – politicians, employers, and others – accountable to the best interest of workers, our families, and those whom we serve.  But we also believe that we must hold ourselves accountable every day to adhering to our mission, vision, and values as a union.

9. Commitment. We believe that we must commit ourselves to our union’s mission, vision, values, and work in order to see our mission accomplished and our vision fulfilled.

10. Winning.   We believe, above all else and by any means necessary, that we must win for our members and their families, for all long-term care workers, for long-term care consumers, and for all workers, everywhere.
