Election 2009: I-1033 Loses, R-71 Wins, and Dow Constantine is is the new King County Executive

For an off-year election, we had a lot at stake. Our work of making thousands of phone calls and knocking on thousands of doors paid off, as we came through with key victories.

No on I-1033I-1033 was defeated. This was the first Tim Eyman-sponsored initiative to lose in an off-election year, and his first tax-related initiative to go down to defeat. I-1033 would have been a disaster for long-term care.

Approve R-71
R-71, which protects domestic partnership rights for same sex and older Washington couples, was approved. R-71 is about fairness for all Washington working families.

Dow Constantine for King County Executive

Dow Constantine won his race for King County Executive, defeating conservative Republican Susan Hutchison. Dow has a strong record of advocating for working families and healthcare.

Most 775NW-backed candidates were victorious throughout Washington.

In local races:

  • All SEIU-endorsed Seattle city council candidates (Licata, Conlin, O’Brien, Bagshaw) were elected handily.
  • All SEIU-endorsed Snohomish County Council candidates (Gossett, Somers, Koster) were re-elected handily.
  • SEIU-endorsed Spokane city council candidate Amber Waldref defeated Tim Eyman’s partner in crime Mike Fagan.
  • SEIU-endorsed Tacoma mayoral candidate Marilyn Strickland has a slight lead after the first round of vote counting.
  • SEIU-endorsed Tacoma city council candidate Keven Rojecki (and Firefighter Union ally) is losing in his race.
  • The SEIU-endorsed Seattle Housing Levy is passing easily.

Election Day - Last Day to Vote

Vote!Today is the last day to vote.
For most of the state this means it's the last day to postmark your ballot.

We are encouraging a No vote on Initiative 1033.
Despite a growing senior population, funding for nursing homes, in-home care and adult day health services are being cut. Tim Eyman’s plan will make our health care crisis even more severe.

In King County, there's a key race between Dow Constantine and Susan Hutchison, a conservative Republican.
We endorsed Dow Constantine after a lengthy and comprehensive process that included a candidate questionnaire, individual meetings between candidates and the leaders of the local unions, and an interview with members of each of the SEIU locals.

3 Major SEIU Locals Announce Endorsement of Dow Constantine for King County Executive

July 15, 2009 -- In the most significant endorsement to date in the highly contested King County Executive's race, three major SEIU locals announced today a sole endorsement for Dow Constantine. SEIU Locals 6, 775NW and 1199NW represent more than 20,000 workers in King County. This includes nurses and other health care workers, home care and nursing home workers, and janitors and security guards. Overall, SEIU is the largest union in the state - representing more than 100,000 workers.

"Working Families can't afford to elect Susan Hutchison - a stealth right-wing candidate backed by corporate special interests," said Lari Power, a home care worker from Mercer Island and a member of SEIU Healthcare 775NW. "Dow Constantine has been willing to take her on, and hand has the vision and the experience to be the best candidate to take her on in the general election and keep King County moving in a progressive direction."

Vote No on Tim Eyman's Initiative 1033

No on I-1033

Tim Eyman’s latest initiative, Initiative 1033, will be on the ballot this November. Our union has joined the coalition to oppose I-1033 because the measure has the potential to severely impede efforts to maintain basic services across the state. If you think the budget cuts this year were bad. It’d be even worse if 1033 passes.

Despite a growing senior population, funding for nursing homes, in-home care and adult day health services are being cut – and 40,000 Washington residents of all ages may lose Basic Health Plan coverage. Eyman’s plan will make our health care crisis even more severe.

Sign our No on I-1033 Pledge Today

We will see more damage to our schools, and a deepening health care crisis. This year we’ve slashed school funding by $1.5 billion, and as many as 3,000 teachers and education employees are facing layoffs. Eyman’s plan will take even more resources away from Washington’s classrooms – and Washington’s kids. I-1033 will also make it harder for us to dig out of the recession.

2009 Endorsements

Vote by November 3rd

We studied where candidates stood on the issues, asked them to complete candidate questionnaires and had home care and nursing home workers meet and interview the candidates.

We need to elect strong progressive candidates who will help us fight for adequate funding for services for the elderly and disabled and living wages for caregivers.
